Russia designates the “Asians of Russia” project a “terrorist organization”

Free Russia Foundation denounces Putin’s campaign to silence independent voices

In late December 2024, Russian authorities formally designated the “Asians of Russia” project a “terrorist organization.” This unprecedented move marks the first time an independent media outlet—the largest platform representing the Asian peoples of Russia—has been assigned this status. Needless to say, the activities of “Asians of Russia” have never been associated with war propaganda, incitement to violence, or terrorism. This designation is a blatant part of the Putin regime’s broader campaign to silence independent voices and crush dissent.

Authorities justified the decision by alleging a connection between “Asians of Russia” and the “Forum of Free Peoples of Post-Russia,” despite repeated denials by the former of any such ties. Additionally, over 170 regional organizations were added to the list alongside “Asians of Russia,” including Free Buryatia Foundation, Free Yakutia Foundation, and New Tuva Foundation, among others.

In today’s world, journalism plays a critical role in defending human rights, preserving cultural heritage, and advocating for justice. This is especially true for independent outlets like “Asians of Russia,” which shed light on the challenges faced by Indigenous peoples and stand against violations of their rights.

Defending the rights of Indigenous peoples is essential to building a fair and democratic society. Free Russia Foundation urges the international community to take notice of this alarming situation and take meaningful steps to support independent media outlets that advocate for the rights of vulnerable groups.

We stand firmly with the “Asians of Russia” project and strongly condemn the actions of the Putin regime, which cynically uses terrorism charges to suppress dissenting voices. This designation is an attack on fundamental human rights and freedom of expression.

Unfortunately, it is highly likely that more media outlets and anti-war movements will be added to the “terrorist” list in the near future. Therefore, Free Russia Foundation remains committed to supporting those who continue to fight for truth, justice, and freedom of speech in the face of growing repression.
