Free Russia Foundation expresses its full support to Vladimir Bukovsky, a fierce critic of President Putin and legendary dissident, who has recently announced a hunger strike to protest charges against him by British prosecutors.
Bukovsky, 73, was charged nearly a year ago of making and holding indecent images of children. In a very unusual fashion the UK prosecution disseminated this news to mass media but since then has failed to demonstrate any concrete evidence behind its claims. In order to uphold his reputation, Bukovsky has filed a counterclaim asking for UK justice system to hold the prosecution for its actions. However, there has been no progress with Bukovsky’s appeal which forced him to resort to the drastic measure such as hunger strike.
On April 20 Bukovsky, who has only recently undergone through a complicated medical procedure, wrote on his blog on the Moscow-based Ekho Moskvy radio station’s website that he will continue his hunger strike until all charges against him are dropped.
It is very alarming that a veteran dissident who has proven his high reputation as a defender of democracy on multiple occasions has to bring attention to a judicial misconduct in the UK with such measures as a hunger strike.
We hope justice prevails, and all charges against him are dropped shortly.
